Seven Myths of Mobile Web
by Maximiliano Firtman

As the Web has moved to mobile devices, developers have said to themselves a lot of stories about what this means for their work. While some of their stories are true, others are misleading, confusing, or even dangerous.

? Therefore, no mobile web, but only the Web?

Me? Having heard this quote many times in recent years, and it's true?. It's painful enough to create a list of your friends on your desktop, you have already? Ignored many people? You do not? T want to have to do all the work again on your phone.

For all these purposes, the mobile web using the same network protocol with the entire Internet: HTTP, HTTPS, POP3, Wireless LAN, and even TCP / IP. However, when developing for mobile web devices we are targeting are very, very different. One problem is that the context in which we use our mobile devices are often very different from where and how we use our convenient desktop or even laptop and netbook.

? Don t get me wrong - it doesn t mean that, as a developer, we need to create two, three, or dozens of versions of duplication of our work?. Users want the same experience on the mobile web because they have on their desktops. In fact some statistics show that users tend to choose the version of the web through a mobile version when using a smartphone.

However, this is because we really love the zooming in and out, rolling and crawling to the information we want, or because the mobile version which is really horrible and don? T offers the right user experience? smartphone I want more!

One website should work for all devices (desktop, mobile, TV, etc.).

As we shall see, there are techniques that allow us to create only one file but still provide a different experience on a variety of devices, including desktops, mobile phones, TVs, and game consoles. Currently, there are many mobile devices with very low connection speeds and limited resources - a non - smartphones that, in theory, can read and parse any file, but will not provide the best user experience and will have the compatibility and performance? problem if we give the same document to the desktop. A little additional work is still needed to provide the right user experience for any mobile device, but there are techniques that can be applied to reduce the required work and avoid duplication of code and data.

Mobile web is easy, Simply create a WML file. WML development called the mobile web (or WAP) development of a few years ago, when the first attempt to build a mobile web is made. There is still a small part WML-only tool available in some markets, but certainly not today WML mobile web.

Simply create an HTML file with a width of 240 Pixels, and you have a mobile website.

This is another fast way to think about the mobile web. Today, there are more than 3,000 mobile devices on the market, with nearly 30 different browsers (actually, more than 300 different browsers if we separate them with a version number). Also, do contribute to the belief that mobile web browsing is useless.

Native mobile applications will kill the mobile web.

Each solution has its advantages and disadvantages. Mobile web (and the new concept of mobile widgets) offers us a platform for multi-device applications, including local applications that don? T require a web that is always connected with the URL and the browser.

People do not use their mobile browser.

How many existing Internet connection in the world?
1802330457 (26% of the world? Population) in early 2010 (http://www.internetworldstats.com)

How many people have a mobile device?
4600000000 (68% of the population) in early 2010 (United Nations Agency for Telecommunications, http://www.itu.int)

So, one of the reasons why people do not use browser their cell phones may be because of us, the web producer. There are other factors, but let? S talk about what we can do from our perspective.
Opera Mini is a mobile browser for low-and mid-range devices. This tells us that 50 million users want to have a better web experience mobile, so they go out and get the Opera Mini. Perhaps not, so? s difficult to know how many would be interested in trying a different mobile web experience. It's quite impressive.

Currently, less than 4% of the total web browsing done from mobile devices. Mobile browsing may never become as popular as desktop browsing, but will improve much in subsequent years.

In addition, users browsing on mobile devices will tend to have higher conversion rates.
